Sales Milestones So Far
Few games have ever grown as fast as Meccha Chameleon. A $5.99 hide-and-seek game made by two Japanese developers in about two months, with no advertising budget, went from a quiet Steam launch in June 2026 to more than 20 million copies sold by August. This article follows the game’s biggest milestones in order and looks at the reasons behind its success.
Where It Started
Meccha Chameleon was created by lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro. Lemorion handled the planning, graphics, music, models and maps, while Haganeiro worked on systems and effects. The idea came from Lemorion remembering an artist on television who painted their own body to blend into the background. The pair had previously made games in Fortnite’s Unreal Editor and titles such as the Penguin Hotel series, and they reused components from those projects, which helped them build the game itself in around two months.
The game was announced on May 15, 2026, and released on Steam on June 10, 2026, for $5.99.
Sales Milestones Timeline
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| June 10, 2026 | Release on Steam, around 20,000 concurrent players on launch day |
| June 12 | 500,000 copies sold in two days |
| June 14 | 1 million copies in about four days |
| June 15 | 2 million copies in five days; over 90,000 concurrent players |
| June 16 | Around $6.9 million in revenue reported |
| June 17 | 3 million copies in a week; number one in Steam sales |
| Around June 20 | 5 million copies; the developer thanked players and promised more maps and options |
| June 22 | 7 million copies; all-time peak of 340,535 concurrent players |
| June 26 | 10 million copies |
| July 5 | 15 million copies in less than a month |
| August 12 | 20 million copies sold, about two months after release |
| September 9 | Launch on Nintendo Switch 2 |
The peak of more than 340,000 concurrent players placed Meccha Chameleon among the most played games in Steam’s history at that moment, and several outlets described it as the fastest and best-selling game of 2026.
Beating the Big Releases
What made the numbers even more striking was the competition. Meccha Chameleon topped the Japanese Steam charts ahead of major titles and was reported to be outselling games like Resident Evil Requiem, Forza Horizon 6 and Crimson Desert. Developers across the industry took notice: a Sega producer called selling two million copies in five days without promotion an achievement that should have been unthinkable.
Why It Sold So Well
A simple idea that is instantly funny
Anyone can understand the game in a few seconds: paint yourself, hide, hope nobody notices. Watching someone stand perfectly disguised while a friend walks past them is funny even if you have never played.
Made for clips and streams
The game spread through short videos and streams rather than advertising. Its creators have said that viral video sharing was part of the plan, and the game explicitly supports streaming and public matches. As one critic noted, you almost do not need to play it to enjoy it.
A very low price
At $5.99, buying the game for a whole group of friends was an easy decision, which fed the word of mouth even further.
Constant updates
New maps, body types, modes and fixes arrived almost every week, giving players a reason to return and new content for creators to show.
Reception
Critics were positive. IGN Benelux gave the game 8/10 and PC Gamer 82/100, and by mid-August the Steam page showed a “Very Positive” rating from more than 73,000 reviews. Some reviewers called it rough around the edges, but praised the creativity it encourages.
The Other Side of Success
Rapid growth also brought problems. In July, a few Steam Workshop maps were found to contain malware and the official Discord server was briefly hacked; the developer patched the vulnerability and restored the server within a day. The game’s popularity also inspired a wave of clones, including Roblox games that at one point attracted more players than the original.
What Comes Next
With the Switch 2 release in September, full cross-play with Steam and a new mod system planned by the end of 2026, Meccha Chameleon is clearly aiming to become a long-term party game rather than a one-summer hit. Whatever the next milestone is, it is already one of the most remarkable success stories in recent gaming history.
