Switch 2 Version: What You Need to Know

Meccha Chameleon started as a Windows game on Steam, but on September 9, 2026 it made its first jump to a console. The Switch 2 version was revealed during that day’s Nintendo Direct and went live on the eShop immediately. If you are thinking about buying it, want to play with friends on PC or just wonder what is different, this guide covers everything that matters: price, cross-play, controls, current limits and the changes that arrived with the first Switch 2 patch.

Release and Price

The Switch 2 version launched on September 9, 2026, the same day it was shown in the Nintendo Direct. There was no pre-order period and no long wait, which surprised many players. During the launch week it was sold at a discounted $4.79, and from September 16 it moved to its regular price of $5.99, the same as on Steam.

Platform Regular price (US) Release
Steam (Windows) $5.99 June 10, 2026
Nintendo Switch 2 $5.99 (launch discount $4.79 until September 16) September 9, 2026

Prices differ by region, so check the eShop in your country for the exact amount. Only Switch 2 is supported; there is no version for the original Switch.

Cross-Play With Steam

The most important detail was not in the Direct trailer but in the developer’s announcement on Steam: cross-play between Switch 2 and Steam is fully supported for the main game. A group of friends split between PC and console can play in the same lobby, and matches with players from both platforms work like any other match.

There is one exception: Workshop mod maps. They cannot yet be played across platforms. The developer plans to add mod map cross-play by the end of 2026 and, at the same time, replace Steam Workshop support with the game’s own mod system, which is described as smoother and more secure. Until then, lobbies using custom maps are effectively PC-only.

What Is the Same

The Switch 2 version is the same game you know from Steam. You get the same roles, Hiders and Hunters, the same modes, including Infection, Double and Reverse Chicken Race, and the official map rotation. Join codes, host settings such as ammo and body sizes, and features like the “Mo Eeyo” skip vote work the same way. Updates are shared too: patch 4.1.1 was released for both versions at the same time.

What Is Different

Touch screen painting

Update 4.1.1 made it possible to paint using the touch screen. For many players this is the biggest advantage of the console version. Laying down a base coat is quick with the stick, but tracing fine edges, shadows and lines with your finger is often faster and more precise than with a mouse.

Controller-first controls

Everything is played on a controller, and the button prompts were adjusted for Switch 2 in the same patch. Several earlier fixes also made stick painting more reliable: brush speed no longer depends on the framerate, the upward drift is gone and the cursor now stays in place after changing brush size.

Host limit

Sessions hosted on Switch 2 are currently limited to 10 players. The cap was temporarily lowered from 12 in update 4.1.1 while the developer investigates a crash. If your group is larger, let a PC player host for now.

Online play

Meccha Chameleon is an online multiplayer game. As with other online Switch games, check that your Nintendo Switch Online membership is active before you try to join a lobby.

Voice Chat on Switch 2

Voice chat got several changes in update 4.1.1 that matter on console. Incoming voice is now muted by default, voice chat can be switched off completely and a microphone icon appears at the top of the screen when your mic picks up sound. If you cannot hear anyone after joining a lobby, turn listening back on in the options.

Should You Buy It on Switch 2 or Steam?

Choose Switch 2 if… Choose Steam if…
You want to play on a TV or handheld You want Workshop custom maps right now
You like the idea of painting with a touch screen You prefer painting and aiming with a mouse
Your friends play on a mix of PC and Switch 2 You often host large lobbies
You do not have a gaming PC You want to try the modding tools

If your PC is too weak for the game, there is also another route: the Windows version has been available through GeForce NOW since June, which lets you stream it to a Mac or a low-end computer.

Tips for New Switch 2 Players

  • Use the stick for base colours and the touch screen for details.
  • Lower the controller painting speed in the settings if your strokes overshoot.
  • Turn voice chat listening on if you want to hear the lobby, or keep it off in public games.
  • If you play with PC friends, ask the player with the best connection to host.
  • Avoid lobbies with custom maps for now; they are not cross-play yet.

What Comes Next

The developer has already shown that the Switch 2 version gets the same fast update pace as Steam. The most important open items are the crash that caused the lower host limit and the move to a new mod system with cross-platform mod maps, planned by the end of 2026. When those arrive, the gap between the two versions should become even smaller.
